Ottinger said she enjoys competing against her father. ![]() It’s about the points chase, and right now, she’s the points leader in the class that includes 12 cracker box boats that race strictly on the West Coast. Ottinger said the race winnings are minimal. She calls it a “very expensive hobby.” She relies on sponsors to help defray the costs. “It’s exciting to me every single time,” she said. Then she completely enjoys the sensations that hit her when she’s skipping over the water at 100 mph. Racing is Ottinger’s escape, her chance to reach deep down, to overcome butterflies every single time she puts on the gear. “In that role, I’m able to help other people who can’t help themselves,” she said. She’s a dialysis technician who sees life and death cases every day, in what she called, “the real world.” Later, young Stump said to Ottinger: “You not only won the race, but you saved my life.” ![]()
